Fund applications and grants

All protocols and applications should undergo peer review before they are sent out of the institution.

Major applications – especially those to the Danish National Research Foundation, ERC, and Innovation Fund Denmark – should go through an extensive peer-review process by the Research and talent committee at the Department of Public Health.

The institute offers peer review of PhD protocols (FP3) before submission to the Graduate School.

Approval of applications

• Budgets > DKK 500,000 must bapproved by the head of department.
• Budgets < DKK 500,000 may be approved by the head of the department secretariat.

At least one week before the application deadline, please send the following to the mailbox: PH_fondsansoegninger@ph.au.dk

If any documents require a signature (e.g. a letter of support), please submit them in PDF format.

Salary funds and overhead

If the overhead/cost recovery rate is below 20%, the Head of Department/Deputy Head of Department for Research and Talent will pay particular attention to the application.

If the application does not include overhead funding, the budget must include infrastructure-related costs, such as your own salary, salary for administrative staff, a data manager or laboratory technician, as well as expenses for computer equipment.

For budgets exceeding DKK 500,000, the Research Support Unit/Health Research Support must review and approve both the budget and the overall cost recovery in advance. The Research Support Unit's calculations must be incorporated into the application.

Fact box: What is the difference between overhead and cost recovery?

Overhead refers to the indirect costs associated with carrying out your project that may be covered by the funding. These costs can include expenses such as rent, heating, electricity, office supplies, telephone costs, and administrative support. Overhead is typically calculated as a percentage of the project's direct costs (e.g. salaries, materials, research stays abroad, conference participation, and publication/dissemination costs).

Cost recovery refers to including existing institutional and project-related indirect costs in the project budget. This typically includes your own salary and the salaries of technical or administrative staff.
