Professor Niels Buus from the Department of Public Health works primarily within mental health and psychiatry, where he studies family-therapeutic interventions and e.g. which communication best encourages positive and constructive dialogue with families and between family members. He has also developed new models to support and train healthcare professionals working in psychiatry and studied the supervision practices of said professional group.

Niels Buus also works with user involvement and is striving to ensure that users of healthcare services can influence research and teaching as much as possible. The aim of this is to reduce traditional hierarchies and democratise knowledge.

"I think that those who’ve benefited the most from my research are actually my students. It’s always been important for me to include research results in my teaching. I’m part of several research networks that strive towards incorporating user voices in teaching – not just as ‘show and tell’ but as partnerships that can create new perspectives and attitudes towards citizens and their families," says Niels Buus.

Niels Buus was born in the city of Tres Arroyos in the Buenos Aires Province of Argentina in 1970 and has previously been a professor at the University of Sydney and Monash University in Melbourne.
