New clinical professor wants to improve prevention and treatment of type 2 diabetes

We all know that the food we eat affects our bodies and our health, and that diet has an especially large impact on your health if you are a diabetic. Newly appointed Professor of Experimental Nutrition Søren Gregersen knows all about this, because his research focuses on the importance of diet for our health.

A healthy diet is an important part of both the treatment and prevention of type 2 diabetes, and Søren Gregersen's research focuses on the effects of dietary changes and supplements with so-called naturally occurring bioactive substances.

Based at Steno Diabetes Center Aarhus, he has conducted research into how extracts from berries and purified substances from coffee affect the sugar and fat metabolism in people with type 2 diabetes or pre-diabetes.

With his research, the newly appointed professor hopes to increase possibilities to prevent type 2 diabetes and improve treatment for people already suffering from the disease.

"With the new professorship, I look forward to expanding research in this area in collaborations between the food industry, the university and the hospital, and to strengthening collaboration between universities in Denmark and abroad," he says.

Søren Gregersen, who took up his position as a clinical professor on 15 November 2023, is also involved in research projects studying the beneficial effects of insulin sensitivity on bone health in healthy individuals and in database studies on the effects of diabetes medication on bone health.

The professorship is being funded by Steno Diabetes Center Aarhus.
