Forming relationships, patients’ nursing needs, and the context under which nursing takes place. These three elements, collectively referred to as the 'Fundamentals of Care', are at the core of Ingrid Poulsen's research. Her field of research is developments within clinical nursing, and she has two overall goals: that patients receive nursing based on their individual needs, and that patients and their families experience a better quality of life. She also aims to bolster the professional identity of nurses, for example by defining the core elements of nursing now and in the future.

Ingrid Poulsen is affiliated with Aarhus University’s Department of Public Health, and she works on projects aimed at improving nursing and treatment for patients with the pulmonary disease COPD, various pain conditions and dysphagia, problems with chewing and swallowing food and liquids.

The newly appointed professor hopes that the professorship will help her intensify and focus her research, and thereby attract more students and colleagues to the field.
